SCYLLA, a six-headed sea monster, fished for dolphins, sea-dogs and sailors—including the crew of Odysseus as his ship sails past her cavern—in the Strait of Messina. According to one myth, she was originally a beautiful sea nymph, loved by Zeus and Poseidon in turn, until changed by the jealousy of Circe into a snapping, barking monster.

Once they have passed the Sirens’ island, Odysseus and his men must navigate the straits between Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a six-headed monster who, when ships pass, swallows one sailor for each head. In the most famous literary text to feature the gruesome twosome, Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus was advised to pass closer to Scylla than to Charybdis, since Scylla would undoubtedly chomp on a few of his crew, but Charybdis, with her strong currents, would probably swallow down his whole ship. Choosing to go around the Clashing Rocks, Odysseus then must confront either Scylla or Charybdis. The first is a six-headed monster lurking in an overhanging, fog-concealed cavern. She cannot be defeated in battle, and she will devour at least six of the Greeks, one for each of her hideous heads that feature triple rows of thickset fangs. Regarding Scylla, Circe tells Odysseus that the she-monster has twelve horrible feet and six long necks, each neck topped with an awful head that has three rows of teeth each.
